A bit of a rant from Mom Kim -- REALLY PEOPLE?

Earlier this morning, The Diva Shasta needed to

go to the vet for a routine kennel cough vaccine

that she was due for - no problem there.  The

problem happened while we were waiting for my

sister to pick us up AFTER our appointment.  Now
don't know nor do I care why the woman had the

dog, a very dirty and terribly ratty looking

Westie - I know at least WITHOUT a leash and

possibly A COLLAR - in the vet's office.  All I

do know is that while me and The Diva Shasta were

out in the waiting room and the other dog was in

the exam room - the door to the exam room opened

and out rushed the Westie.  What happened next is still somewhat of a blur (now PLEASE hear me - I am NOT trying to bash Westies, they are terrific dogs and my sister has owned Westies for 30 years - however it is irresponsible OWNERS that I bash but NOT the dog)

FIRST - WE ARE ALL FINE!

However if our disgruntled vet had not

intervened, then The Diva Shasta might have had

to have more then just a kennel cough vaccine -

the Westie went straight for the back of her

neck.  I could hear our vet say that he couldn't

figure out why people brought their dogs in

WITHOUT a leash (I can't either)  Meanwhile, a

man had also brought in his young puppy

definitely WITHOUT a leash or collar -

REALLY PEOPLE!

It is not a large practice or office - either dog

or puppy could escape at any given moment.  I KNOW

my dogs - they DO NOT go anywhere without their

collar, harness AND leash except our backyard

which is fenced and I am there at any given

moment.

Now I may have made some people angry with me-

but this is our blog and I am expressing MY

opinion.  But to avoid any possible incidences and

attacks, then leash your dog when out in public-

that's all I ask.  A leash doesn't cost a lot-

they cost a lot less than a vet visit and

possible legal actions.  If you can't afford to

buy a leash THEN you shouldn't have a puppy or

that dog.  If you think putting a collar and

leash on a puppy or a dog is too time consuming

or inconvenient then evidently you have time to

sit in a vet's office and/or courtroom.
Ok, I'm done, I will get down off my soapbox now.

Well said, Kim,
I couldn't agree with you more!
Thank goodness Shasta is ok, that would have rattled my cage for sure!

Sorry, but that was irresponsible period- no one should have theri baby out without a collar and leash. At least Her Majesty is fine as are you!

Glad you - and Shasta - are okay, but geeze!! I actually go one step further... I walk the fur-girls with retractable leashes but for vet visits, they go on the 4' webbed leashes, and they remain leashed while in the exam room. That way, and human with feet can stomp on said leash in an emergency.

Hrmph. We're cranky for you!!!

Frankie & Ernie's MOM here!! I am with you 100% .... THERE is NO EXCUSE for this.

BUT I do want to say this... WHY did the Receptionist/or Vet ALLOW the DOG IN without a LEASH???????????? OUR VET has 2 receptionists and I have HEARD them First ASK NICELY... for a person to Pick up one of the leashes that HANG in PLAIN SIGHT... and then TELL them that EVERY DOG must be LEASHED for EVERYONE's SAFETY. I once heard one of the girls tell someone that they would have to LEAVE and find ANOTHER VET... for refusing to pick up one of the LOANER LEASHES... that hang right there ... for those who come in without. THESE are special leashes that can actually DOUBLE as a COLLAR and Leash Combo..
An UNLEASHED Dog... in a STRESSFUL Place like the Vet's Office... Is a DANGER to Him/herself and OTHERS.. People AND Dogs.
ALSO our VET REQUIRES all CATS to enter the OTHER door... and are REQUIRED to be CRATED... there are even FREE/Loaner Crates RIGHT THERE.
This is for the SAME reasons for Leashing Dogs.
PLUS our vet office has a Double Door system.
NOW..all that being said... is is possible that this dog was Found as a STRAY and these folks brought it in.. to be checked out for ... whatever???
Even under THAT possibility... there SHOULD have been a MUCH BETTER system for RESTRAINT and PROTECTION of YOUR BELOVED BABY.
Those folks SHOULD have kept the dog under control... It is an UNACCEPTABLE situation.
I am just sooooooooo glad that OUR SWEETIE is SAFE and ALWAYS so WELL CARED FOR and ABOUT.
OKAY... I'll get off the Soap Box too... but not until I say... THANK YOU KIM for putting this up. It MAY just prevent some OTHER Person from committing such a breach of protocol.

Yep, this annoys mom too. In our townhouse complex we have a bylaw that dogs are to be leashed at all times. It seems lately that most of the dog owners are not doing that and dogs just run across the road or parking lot at us. We don't like this behaviour at all and we start barking so then the dumb people yell and say that their dog is friendly! That totally ticks mom off and she yells back that we AREN'T friendly. Of course, then the dumb people get mad at mom!

Like Frankie's vet, ours has leashes hanging up in the waiting room with a "please leash your dog" sign. How tough is that??

Oh CRAP!!!! I can't believes that!!!! NO LEASH????? It's a rule at our vets that if you don't have a leash, you are NOT seen! Our vets is a converted house, and it is small and not a lot of room, and if that would have happened, there would have been blood. And not mine. It wouldn't have been pretty.
I'm glad everyone is okay, and Ma is still spittin' out those HBO words...

Kim....
I totally hear you about loose dogs and leases!! And I cannot disagree!! I have known of people who seemingly think it better for their canines to be leash-free. :-(
The results can be heartbreaking, people!! ;op

Why did the vet allow them in without a leash and collar/harness?!

I agree with you 100%. Unless it's a specified off leash area and your dog has a rock solid recall, they need to be on leash at all times.

Nola has a great recall, but I only let her off at the beach.

Ditto Goose. You and Frankies' mum are quite right. You would not be allowed in without a leash or crate at our vets. Luckily no harm was done. Have a super Sunday.

Ugh. My asst. completely agrees (and me too.) I've been terrorized on my own street by several dogs who are never leashed. But, the VET's office?? Should not happen... ever!

With you all the way and glad Shasta didn't get hurt. At our vet's office, they have slip leads hanging in a prominent place with a sign saying pets must be leashed. What amazes me is that people must be told this!

Debra@Peaceabull said...

Our vet's office has leashes and a sign at the door as well, but we notice that it's not always adhered to. I'm glad Miss Diva is ok. That is always my biggest fear, not because I'm afraid of anyone getting hurt but as you know ...No matter what Ray would be blamed, even if he was sitting on my lap and someone ran up and tore his ear off. We were actuall at the vet on Saturday to get his heartworm "cookie" and get weighed. There were two cats in the waiting room. One was in a crate and the other was wrapped in a towel and sitting on the owner's lap. I'm proud to say Ray (surprisingly) ignored them both. :-)

I agree, if you have a pet you have to be a conscious, responsible parent in every way. I never understood how people could walk with their dogs unleashed, and I used to envy those people and the trust they had in their canines. However, I would much rather have a safe healthy dog than one that might suddenly do the zippy dance and get hurt on the highway.

Oh that would make me mad too. We have that problem at daycare. Sure, the daycare doggies are all friendly, but sometimes dogs arriving for boarding or grooming are shy or grouchy and they don't want some mental fits running up in their faces. I'm relieved that you are all OK. Does the vet not have slip collar leash things to hand out to miscreants?

Dexter
